Heat Pump Questions
An air source heat pump extracts heat from outside air and concentrates it to heat your building and water. Even in winter at 0 degrees C, there is usable heat energy in the air. The heat pump uses a refrigerant cycle to absorb this low-grade heat and compress it to a useful temperature. For every 1 kWh of electricity consumed, a modern heat pump delivers 2.5-4 kWh of heat, making it 250-400% efficient.
COP measures heat pump efficiency: a COP of 3.2 means for every 1 kWh of electricity, you get 3.2 kWh of heat. Seasonal COP (SCOP) averages this across the year, typically 2.8-3.5 for UK commercial installations. Well-insulated buildings with underfloor heating achieve higher COPs because lower flow temperatures are needed. Poorly insulated buildings with radiators achieve lower COPs.
Yes, and this is one of the most cost-effective combinations. Solar panels generate electricity during the day which can directly power the heat pump, reducing running costs to near zero for daytime heating. A battery storage system allows you to store excess solar for evening heating. This combination can deliver a 70-80% reduction in heating costs compared to a gas boiler.
Most commercial buildings can benefit from a heat pump, but suitability depends on insulation quality, existing heating distribution system (underfloor heating is ideal, radiators work but may need upsizing), available outdoor space for the unit, electrical supply capacity, and noise requirements. Our free site survey assesses all these factors and provides a clear recommendation.
Commercial heat pumps qualify for 100% capital allowances under the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA), providing a 25% tax saving at current corporation tax rates. Some local authorities offer additional grants. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers domestic properties but not commercial. We help identify all applicable funding during the quotation process.
