When most people visit Woodhall Manor, they see a beautifully maintained wedding venue surrounded by landscaped grounds and historic buildings.
What they don't see is the section of land that, until recently, had become an unused and neglected part of the estate.
For years, the area had accumulated waste soil, overgrown hedgerows, mature conifer trees and disused storage buildings. It provided little value to the venue and certainly wasn't a location most people would immediately identify as suitable for a commercial solar installation.
Today, that same piece of land generates clean renewable electricity, reduces energy costs across the estate and helps support one of Suffolk's most prestigious wedding venues.
This is the story of how EC Eco Energy transformed a forgotten area of the site into a long-term energy asset.
The Challenge
Woodhall Manor operates a busy hospitality business comprising a manor house, commercial kitchens, offices and event facilities.
Like many wedding venues, energy consumption can fluctuate significantly depending on bookings, events and seasonal demand. Large kitchens, heating systems, lighting and guest facilities all contribute to substantial electricity usage throughout the year.
Prior to the installation, combined electricity costs across the estate averaged approximately £8,500 per month.
The obvious solution was renewable energy generation, but before any solar design work could begin there was a more immediate problem.
The proposed installation area was unusable.
The site contained:
- Years of accumulated waste soil
- Nine mature conifer trees standing over 60 feet tall
- Overgrown hedgerows
- Redundant storage buildings
- Uneven ground conditions
Before construction could even be considered, the land had to be completely transformed.
Six Weeks of Site Clearance Before Construction Could Begin
Unlike many commercial solar projects that start with a prepared site, this project required extensive enabling works.
Over a six-week period, the EC Eco Energy team undertook major clearance operations to create a usable area for development. Enabling works on this scale are part of our civils and groundworks capability on every project.
Trees were removed, vegetation cleared, waste materials removed and the land carefully prepared for construction.
By the time the clearance works were complete, an area that had previously been neglected had been transformed into a site ready for renewable energy generation.
Building a Solar Farm Through One of the Wettest Periods of the Year
If preparing the site wasn't challenging enough, construction began during exceptionally poor weather conditions.
Heavy rainfall turned much of the site into deep mud, with some areas experiencing close to two feet of standing mud underfoot.
The combination of wet ground, restricted access and sensitive site conditions meant that machinery could not always be relied upon.
Temporary access roads were not an option, forcing the installation team to adapt continuously throughout the project.
Despite the conditions, work continued safely and efficiently, allowing the project to remain on track.
A Bespoke Energy Solution for Two Separate Electrical Supplies
One of the unique aspects of Woodhall Manor is that the estate operates using separate MPAN supplies for different parts of the business.
The Manor House and the Kitchen & Operations buildings each have their own electricity supply.
Rather than treating the estate as a single installation, EC Eco Energy designed a system that could optimise performance across both supplies.
The completed installation includes:
- 172kWp Solar PV System
- 400 High-Efficiency Solar Panels
- 60kW Battery Storage
- Dedicated design for both MPAN supplies
- Advanced monitoring and export optimisation
This approach ensures each area of the business receives the maximum benefit from renewable generation.
Managing a Wedding Venue's Unique Energy Demand
Unlike factories or offices that often follow predictable working hours, wedding venues can experience dramatic changes in electricity consumption from one day to the next.
Some days involve large events with high energy demand. Other periods are significantly quieter.
To ensure the system continues delivering value throughout the year, EC Eco Energy configured the installation to take advantage of a competitive export tariff.
This means that when on-site demand is lower than solar generation, excess electricity is exported back to the grid, creating an additional revenue stream rather than allowing energy to go unused.
The Results
The completed system has delivered exceptional results across the estate.
Manor House
The Manor House is now capable of operating effectively off-grid during significant periods of the year, dramatically reducing dependence on imported electricity.
Kitchen & Operations Buildings
The commercial kitchen and operational facilities have seen electricity costs reduce by approximately 85%.
Estate-Wide Benefits
The venue now benefits from:
- Significantly reduced energy costs
- Increased energy independence
- Battery-backed renewable energy generation
- Export income from surplus generation
- Reduced exposure to future electricity price increases
Environmental Impact
The 172kWp solar installation is expected to generate between:
155,000 and 175,000 kWh of clean electricity every year
This will reduce carbon emissions by approximately:
35–40 tonnes of CO2 every year
Over the lifetime of the system, this equates to hundreds of tonnes of avoided carbon emissions while supporting the venue's wider sustainability goals.
More Than a Solar Installation
For Woodhall Manor, this project was about more than reducing electricity bills.
It was about taking an area of the estate that had little practical use and transforming it into an asset that now generates value every single day.
What was once an overgrown and unused section of land is now producing renewable energy, supporting business operations and helping secure the venue's long-term energy future.
The project demonstrates that with the right design, planning and expertise, even challenging sites can become highly productive renewable energy assets.
